New Silicon Valley Technical Center will Head Visteon’s Development of Artificial Intelligence for Autonomous Vehicles
Partnerships and collaboration between Silicon Valley and automakers are emerging at a rapid pace in the push to develop self-driving cars. Visteon opened the doors to its new Silicon Valley office on Dec. 6, 2016, which will spearhead the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) activities - particularly in the areas of autonomous driving - and infotainment.
The region is home to the world’s most recognized technology brands and has strong bonds with two of the leading research institutions that are exploring the robotics and AI that are fast finding their way into our lives - and now also our cars. Part of the Chief Technology Office (CTO), Visteon’s new facility, located in Santa Clara, California, will work closely with the global technical centers in Karlsruhe, Germany, and Pune, India, to build capability in AI software, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), deep machine learning and infotainment.
Heading the Silicon Valley office and the global AI team is Vijay Nadkarni, who recently joined Visteon from Chalkzen, Inc., where he developed and launched a unique software as a service (SaaS) and connected car services platform. Vijay is responsible for building a team of neural network and cognitive computing experts who will primarily support the development of Visteon’s upcoming autonomous platform by applying AI for object detection, vehicular path planning, driver monitoring and driver behavior. The team will play a key role in delivering control systems, localization and vision processing – interpreting live camera data and converting it to the information required for autonomous driving.
The Silicon Valley center will also house the essential tools for design and implementation, including GPU-based deep learning servers, driving simulators, autonomous cars and the AI framework that will be used for neural network design and training, data collection and validation. The facility will act as the AI team’s headquarter and provide a central location for Visteon’s other activities in the area.
